Good Hotel Guide Review
'An extremely relaxing weekend' is on offer at Wendy and Jim Sarton's characterful timber-frame manor house in deepest Constable country, where residential art courses are a big draw. ‘The house has a lovely feeling of being lived in – possibly shabby chic,' writes a reader. 'We were welcomed by Wendy, no forms or books to fill in, with a pot of tea, delicious fresh lemon drizzle cake, in their lovely cosy sitting room in front of a log fire.' Another reader adds that 'the decor is most attractive, with burgundy walls, exposed beams, striking cushions and a range of artwork.' Four bedrooms are in the hall, with beams and wonky floors. Annexe rooms around the art studio have a pleasing rustic style, the occasional quirk (one room was accessed via the kitchen). Readers enjoyed the ‘delicious food’, with traditional dishes such as beef with mushrooms and red wine as well as more unusual choices such as lamb kidneys with mustard sauce or mushroom and cream cheese pancakes. 'Breakfast was perfect' with a 'good buffet choice' followed by cooked dishes that set you up to explore the beautiful countryside. (Richard Bright, DS, MH)
