Good Hotel Guide Review
The proud boast of this opulent hotel is that it has a hundred windows facing the lagoon. A short walk from St Mark’s Square, it was built in 1860 and later merged with another hotel next door. It is said to be ‘eye-wateringly expensive’, but visitors continue to love it: ‘Perfectly placed on the waterfront,’ says one. ‘Staff were helpful; breakfast was stylish.’ Earlier comments: ‘A most enjoyable stay. Service was warm, welcoming and efficient. Our room was exceptionally comfortable. Looking out of its window was a constant source of interest.’ ‘Our balcony, where we enjoyed our evening drink, faced the water.’ ‘White, fluffy towels and linen sheets replaced daily.’ Lavishly decorated bedrooms have silks, brocades, original Biedermeier furniture, a marble bathroom. Some look over red-tiled roofs. Room 106, where Tchaikovsky stayed in 1877, is ‘truly lovely’. Public rooms, ‘surprisingly small’, are in neo-classical style: much glass, Aubusson carpets on marble floors. The Do Leoni restaurant, formal, and ‘pricey’, is ‘excellent for Venetian fish’; desserts are ‘unusual and delicious’. The bar serves good snacks. The outside terrace is ‘most elegant’.
