The island of Noirmoutier, north-west of La Rochelle, was a monastic settlement in the seventh century; now tourism is its main industry. Linked to the mainland by a bridge and, at low tide, by a “spectacular causeway”, it is a peaceful place which has been spared the high-rise developments of other holiday coastal resorts. In the north-east, on the edge of its main town, this white-fronted hotel, an “oasis of calm” (say fans), is run by its owners, Pierrick and Amandine Wattecamps. Built in 1982 in marine/Vendéen style, it has attractive gardens and a good-sized swimming pool. Much renovation and redecoration takes place. “All is fresh, full of character (the odd antique, good textiles, judicious use of natural materials). Our first-floor room had distant views of castle and church; traditional pine furniture, quilted bedspreads, nice pictures gave a feel of summery comfort.” “Superior” rooms have a small terrace and direct access to garden and swimming pool. The restaurant has two sections: one has white-painted wood panelling, and paintings of local scenes; the other has a large window (“spectacular sunsets”). “Simple, light” dishes by Eric Pichou include steak de thon, fondue de tomates aux anchois et olives. Wines are fairly priced. Breakfast has an “adequate buffet”.
