This old town has fascinating Roman remains, not public buildings but patrician villas, shops, a bridge and an amphitheatre; nearby is the modern section, with shops and restaurants. To the south, across the River Ouvèze, the Haute Ville is the medieval quarter with narrow, winding streets, entered by a 14th-century gateway. Here, Yann and Christine Christiansen are the owner/managers (the family has presided for over 100 years) of a conversion of two 16th/17th-century houses. ‘Quiet and comfortable’, according to recent visitors, it has ‘lovely rooms, lovely views, reasonable prices’ and up-to-date accommodation. The restaurant serves dishes such as salad with cured duck breast fillet, Provencal flavour; foie gras in a terrine, traditional style, with brioche ; sea bass filet, sauce Isabelle; half pigeon caramelised in a casserole and crème brûlée” with lavender honey. ‘Our breakfast tray was brought to our room up a stone spiral staircase’ (it can also be served on the terrace, with a buffet). ‘Furniture and decoration are good.’ There is a pretty garden, a swimming pool in the second building, a salad bar on the terrace in summer, and a tea room. Main parking is at the foot of the old city, but there are some spaces available in front of the hotel. Local attractions include the medieval villages of Séguret and Crestet, and the Côtes du Rhône wine valley.
