Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Efficient, enjoyable, individual’, the Alex has views of the towering Matterhorn. Its ‘kind owners’, Alex and Gisela Perren, offer ‘old-fashioned hospitality’, say their fans. The decor, found ‘kitsch’ by one visitor, is loved for its quirkiness by others: ‘Lots of stained glass, bar seats like chamois (with horns, and bells around their necks), old prams with dolls, plaster frogs supporting lily pads, dried and artificial flower arrangements everywhere.’ ‘Our quiet rooms had carved pine-panelled walls, proper down duvets, plenty of cupboard space, spa bath with underwater illumination.’ In the beamed, candlelit dining rooms: ‘dinner was excellent, with prompt service; Frau Perren, in an exotic outfit each night, went round the tables, chatting to guests.’ Her husband, a former mountain guide, ‘gives advice on ski routes and mountain restaurants’ (access to ski slopes is close by). The cocktail bar has music and dancing, wines by the glass, ‘healthy cocktails’ and cigars. ‘Substantial buffet breakfast.’ A terrace for summer meals. The indoor swimming pool resembles a grotto.
