‘Our favourite small hotel in the world,’ says a traveller after his fourth visit. ‘Its position, above the town, gives it the feel of a private hideaway. The owners, Andrea and Rosaria Quartucci, and their delightful staff offer the perfect combination of warmth, hospitality and professionalism.’ They serve ‘sumptuous breakfasts’ of local cheeses, olives, cured meats, marinated vegetables, fruits and Sicilian sweets, on the terrace or in the restaurant (both have ‘breathtaking views’ of Mount Etna and the Bay of Naxos’). All rooms have a flowery balcony or terrace overlooking this ‘incredible panorama’. The suites, in a house among lemon trees, face the Straits of Messina. The decor is ‘utterly tasteful: hand-painted furnishings and Sicilian damask along with every modern creature comfort’. Romantic flourishes, eg, ‘fresh flowers on the pillows’, abound. ‘In the late afternoon, sitting in the hot tub under the trees while sipping a beverage is heaven.’ The owners ‘recommend wonderful eateries’, and the villa has parking, ‘a real plus in Taormina’.
