Good Hotel Guide Review
Romantically set above the Rhine (stunning views), this medieval castle is reached by ‘quite a walk up, on cobblestones’ (luggage follows by tractor). Outwardly severe, it is cosy inside, ‘a warren of nooks and crannies’: small courtyards and dining rooms, a lounge in a tower, a handsome library, and an extensive castle garden. ‘Everything is tasteful: superb etchings/paintings.’ The owner/managers, Wolfgang and Barbara Hüttl, are ‘excellent hosts’, say their guests. Their English-speaking staff are friendly, and the bedrooms are ‘lovely’. The best ones are in the tower. ‘Our huge room had windows on all four sides, a small balcony. Furnishings were homely.’ One ‘very nice’ bathroom was ‘built over the roof and hidden by a bookcase’. Some rooms are small; back ones are quietest; river-facing ones get noise from the trains below. The ‘superb’ food is elaborate, eg, lamb in a thyme and Parmesan crust with ratatouille tart. Guests dine in the courtyard in fine weather. ‘A lovely lunch on the terrace facing the Rhine. The local white wine is wonderful.’ There is smoked salmon with Sekt for breakfast, and free sherry in bedrooms. Toys, etc, are provided for children. The castle museum is worth a visit, admission is free for hotel guests.
