Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Magical.’ ‘Delightful.’ This former 10th-century fortress, near the awesome Gorges du Verdon, is owned by the family of Guillaume Thomas. ‘The welcome is warm and genuine,’ say visitors. High above the village, it has ‘sensational’ panoramic views from the battlements where breakfast (a ‘theatrical event’ with fruit, pastries, yogurt, home-made jams) and aperitifs are served by ‘attentive’ staff. In the ‘gorgeous’ medieval dining room, formerly an armoury, ‘we had the best meal of our week’. Staying here, ‘you need the agility of a mountain goat’: the bedrooms, ‘superbly decorated in fitting style’, with four-poster beds, are reached from the battlements, by a path along a wooden gangplank above a steep drop, down solid rock steps (no lift or fitted carpets). ‘Our room had superb views, stone semi-vaulting, brocade-canopied bed, TV.’ ‘Ours, in a tower, was spacious and comfortable.’ ‘The silence is breathtaking.’ Guests are expected to dine in.
