A honey-coloured 18th-century bastide, run by Penny and Julien Hemery as a charming small hotel. Light and airy, full of Provençal colour, it is in the valley between Gordes and the Luberon hills. For this expensive area, popular with artists and holiday sun-seekers, rates are relatively modest. Rooms are all different; some have a patio. At the good-sized pool, you help yourself to drinks from a fridge on an honesty basis and look towards the Luberon over the garden full of lavender bushes. There’s an ample buffet breakfast. Dinner is cooked five nights a week (the menu is displayed after breakfast). Guests mingle over free aperitifs in the courtyard and move on to dinner at individual tables. There are tiled floors and potted plants, and ancient plane trees in the spacious grounds.
