Good Hotel Guide Review
Jean-Marc Six was a sommelier in Lille when he won a million francs in a bottle-top collecting competition sponsored by Perrier. He bought this auberge in a village (famous for its ancient churches) in the pretty Course valley, south-east of Boulogne. He runs it with his wife, Laurence. “A very pleasant family,” say visitors. Monsieur Six and his waitress serve “with calm efficiency”; he “takes time to chat”; Madame”s housekeeping is “excellent”. The small, whitewashed building, with blue-and-white shutters, offers “excellent value”. Rooms are “simple but well cared for; towels are “the big fluffy sort”. A garden (with roses, fruit and walnut trees and pond) leads to the river, where M. Six farms trout. The restaurant serves “good, relatively simple” meals, with classic and regional set menus. “Superb wine list.” “Breakfast also simple and good” (fresh orange juice, fruit, yogurts, home-made jams). Meals are served outdoors in fine weather. One visitor in poor weather found “nowhere to sit indoors”. Near a main road, but “relativement calme”, say the Sixes.
