Liked immensely by many readers (‘good, quiet, exceptional value’; ‘an excellent hotel in a very good location’), this converted town house is named after the ‘great men’ entombed in the Panthéon opposite. It claims also to be the birthplace of Surrealism: many Surrealist writers and painters stayed here. Furnished in ‘high empire neo-classical style’, it is thought ‘great fun’. ‘It is small, and the landings are difficult to negotiate when the chambermaids have their trolleys in place. But the reception staff could not have been more helpful.’ Bedrooms vary in size. ‘Ours had textile wall-covering depicting scenes of ancient Egypt; pleasant, if somewhat bizarre.’ ‘Our lovely, small fifth-floor room had a view of the Panthéon, floodlit at night, two pairs of French windows: we slept with them open and all was quiet at night.’ From the top-floor rooms you can see to Sacré-Cœur. Breakfast in a small vaulted cellar is a buffet, or it can be brought to the room. The Moncelli family also owns the Hôtel Les Dames Panthéon, next door, similar in price, with ‘pretty, feminine’ bedrooms, and three other hotels in Paris: the Hotel la Belle Juliette, Hotel Baume and Hotel Design Sorbonne.
