Located in a 17th-century house on the canal in the Bohemian Jordaan district, this glamorous, contemporary hotel reopened in 2010 after a full-scale renovation, under the new ownership of Jessica and Peter Frankopan. The rambling house is ‘a treasure trove of wax pictures, carved objects, little tapestries, wrought iron, plants and ecclesiastic bric-a-brac’; these were retained along with the original timber beams and ornate fireplaces. Rooms are decorated in dark purple hues; ‘a very nice room facing the quay and canal’ was liked; earlier visitors had a quiet garden-facing room. Beds are large and ‘very comfortable’. Some rooms are ‘difficult to reach with luggage’, although the hotel does have a lift. Breakfast is served ‘until a decently late time’ in the Great Room, a large garden-facing room linking two buildings and conceived by the original owner as an impressive entertainment area. There’s ‘comfortable seating and plenty of space, a good cold buffet, regularly replenished. Attentive waiters serving hot drinks. Hot food to order (extra charge), varied choice’. The bar serves tea and drinks. Hostaria, ‘excellent Italian’, is recommended for meals nearby.
