Good Hotel Guide Review
On the site of a former farm, the Chambon family’s famous restaurant-with-rooms started life as a hotel/café in 1886 when a stone bridge was built over the River Ouysse. The bridge is no longer usable (damaged by floods), but the setting, below Château Belcastel (on a cliff), is delightful. The riverside terrace, where meals are taken under walnut and lime trees in fine weather, ‘is particularly attractive’, says our inspector, ‘ideal for an aperitif, before sampling father and son Daniel and Stéphane Chambon’s ‘refined’ cuisine (one Michelin star). Their inventive dishes, regionally inspired, include queues de langoustines aux truffes. Earlier praise: ‘A lovely spot, delicious meal, friendly owners.’ The wine list is ‘remarkable’. Bedrooms face the terrace; some are up a spiral staircase. ‘Ours, bright and fresh, had strong colours, French windows, a narrow spa bath.’ ‘Superb breakfasts.’ ‘A delightful swimming pool’, with views, loungers and parasols.
