In the Cher valley, near Chenonceaux and Blois, this ‘idyllic’ medieval château stands on a hillside. Owned by Philippe Savry, and part of the small Savray group, it is ‘a perfect example of traditional local architecture’, according to its nominators. Earlier visitors have been Charles VII, Louis XI and Charles de Gaulle. With a round tower on each of three corners, it is set round a courtyard with a Renaissance loggia looking over the valley. Rooms are spacious and quietly furnished in traditional style; many have an en suite bathroom in a tower. ‘The atmosphere is extremely civilised: high-quality restoration has kept the feel of a large private house. No TVs in bedrooms but a small, pleasant TV room on the ground floor. Lots of places to sit: courtyard, terrace, by the 25-metre pool which is designed in keeping with its surroundings.’ Some bedrooms near the pool, with parking nearby, are suitable for those unable to walk up the spiral staircases in the main building. ‘The food is superb, beautifully presented, served in the vaulted dining room or on the terrace. The menus, for all sizes of appetite, use local, seasonal products. Good range of local wines. Breakfast is light and tasty.’ A main-line railway runs through the valley: occasional trains can be heard. The road beneath the château is audible from pool and rooms, but has little traffic at night. ‘There is some parkland round the building, enough for a short stroll.’
