Good Hotel Guide Review
Named after a mistress of Charles VII who was also an enthusiastic cook, this ‘sweet, unpretentious little place, astonishingly cheap’, has long been loved by Guide readers. Owned and run by the ‘smart, polite and welcoming’ Catherine Raoust and her husband, it stands by the Vienne, below the great castle. Rooms are in two buildings. ‘Ours, separate from the main one, had a little terrace with tables, chairs and creepers, delightful in summer.’ ‘Our good-sized room had two narrow balconies facing the river. Inevitably it heard traffic; earplugs helped.’ ‘Our beamed room across a side alley lacked a view, but had character to compensate.’ ‘Room service was charming. Accommodation is homely. A fine modern bathroom.’ Breakfast (fresh orange juice, nothing packaged, lots of croissants, etc) in a ‘tastefully decorated, high-ceilinged room’ on the terrace or in the bedroom is ‘graciously served’. For dinner L’Océanic, a seafood restaurant in the pedestrianised area, and Au Plaisir Gourmand are both warmly recommended.
