Good Hotel Guide Review
In a wooded park outside Amboise, facing the Loire, this small château was built in 1244 by Geoffrey de Pray; later, the wife of Alphonse Daudet lived here. Now a highly regarded hotel, it is managed by Cécile Cariou-Crochemore. Fifteen hotel rooms are in the chateau, and four duplex rooms face the castle. ‘Staff very friendly, but not OTT; the food was outstanding; our fellow guests were cosmopolitan,’ says a visitor. Earlier comments: ‘A beautiful old building, interesting and full of heraldry.’ ‘A comfortable bedroom, good bathroom, good housekeeping, cosy atmosphere.’ ‘Good value.’ Public rooms have suits of armour, stained glass, timbered ceilings, panelling. The chef, Frédéric Bisset, has a Michelin star; there is a selection of set menus and a buffet breakfast is extra. Concerts of classical music are occasionally held; balloon and helicopter trips can be arranged.
