Good Hotel Guide Review
This classic seaside resort was popular with the aristocracy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Just outside, this handsome 19th-century villa stands in ‘delightful’ terraced gardens facing the sea. ‘It is almost unspoilt,’ says a visitor, ‘the quality of the workmanship is a delight.’ Others wrote of a ‘fabulous atmosphere’, ‘an excellent stay’. One couple had a room on the attic floor: ‘Plain and a bit brown, but good; it had a lovely view across the bay. The bathroom was well equipped, but the basin had no plug.’ Another couple had a first-floor junior suite: ‘Enormous bedroom with wonderful view, reading room, spacious bathroom with small balcony (and plugs).’ You can bathe in the clear, unpolluted water from a ladder reached down 110 steps. The restaurant is thought excellent, and hotel guests receive a 10% discount. You can walk to town by the Lungomare, a footpath stretching 12 kilometres along the Kvarner Riviera, a popular option with guests. Not much to do in Opatija, but trips can be made to various islands.
