Good Hotel Guide Review
Connected to the mainland at La Rochelle, by a three-kilometre toll bridge, the Île de Ré has sandy beaches, oyster beds and, out of season, “an air of tranquillity”. On its north side, the Gendre family”s “very fine”, modern, white hotel was thought “expensive, but worth every penny” by visitors. “Our bedroom, beautifully decorated, with ships, etc, painted direct on whitewashed walls, had a big balcony with sea views, and a splendid bathroom.” Some rooms are in “rather motel-like” bungalows, fronted by table, chairs and loungers. “Luxurious yet relaxing” public areas include a small library. There is some “splendid” stained glass, notably a depiction of Richelieu above the lovely staircase. “Half-board guests are herded into one part of the panoramic dining room, but service was attentive and the atmosphere unstuffy.” “A wonderful dinner”; the restaurant under Olivier Cloteau specialises in seafood. Local wines are on the list. “Breakfast the best of our trip.” The gardens are lovely; the swimming pool is large, with loungers. There is a thalassotherapy centre with various treatments. The beach is across the road: tides go far out, and bathing can be shallow.
