Good Hotel Guide Review
Built in 1526, this creeper-covered building was the home of the Earl of Montgomery, who accidentally killed the French king, Henry II, in a tournament. Now a hotel ‘full of character’ (Best Western), it has many original features: carved wooden staircase, painted ceilings, 16th-century paintings; one room has an amazing four-poster bed. ‘Our entire stay was a pleasure,’ say recent visitors. ‘Stairs are narrow and twisty, floors squeak; the decor is old-fashioned, but the renovated bathrooms work beautifully.’ Some rooms face the town, some the garden; some have a spa bath, a junior suite has a double bath. Five minutes’ drive from Mont-Saint-Michel; an hour from D-Day beaches.
