‘Delightful’ and smart, the Maeder family’s chalet-style hotel is on the outskirts of the village. ‘Cosy in winter’, it has ‘a lovely large lounge’ with open fire, gallery, and large, tartan-covered chairs. ‘We were warmly welcomed,’ said Christmas visitors. ‘The food was excellent throughout our stay.’ Meals are in the wood-panelled Burestube (Swiss cuisine), the Grüne Saal or, ‘for the connoisseur’, Au Gourmet for eg, beef with wild mushrooms and stuffed pepper; lobster with truffle sauce. Meals are also served in the winter garden and, in summer, on a terrace. The bedrooms, all different, are light and modern: the largest have a balcony and a spa bath. Children are welcomed. The hotel bus sometimes takes guests on outings. The Landgasthof Ruedihus, serving Swiss specialities, five minutes’ walk away, is under the same ownership. ‘It has lovely rooms and a 19th-century atmosphere.’
