Good Hotel Guide Review
This village, at the western end of the Bernese Oberland, is good all year round for a holiday: skiing and glaciers in winter, ‘a hiker’s paradise’ in summer. Just above it is the Oeschinensee, a delightful oval lake overlooked by mountain peaks. It can be reached by the chairlift that starts near this friendly little chalet hotel, which was thought ‘fabulous’ by a visitor. ‘Wonderful location. Our room had a mountain view. We could see three waterfalls from our balcony and hear the nearby rushing river.’ A party of four adults and four children spent a week and ‘were sad to leave’. The owners, Rosemarie and Karl Bieri (she is the cook, he the ‘attentive but unobtrusive host’), live here with their two children, Tamara and Joel, and they welcome families. They serve refreshments all day, and the garden restaurant is popular with locals. The rooms are well equipped: some have a spa bath. Earlier praise: ‘From the moment you enter, you feel welcome. Staff are excellent.’ ‘Blissfully quiet.’ ‘Food is the strong point’ (there is an emphasis on organic ingredients). ‘The meals for residents were simple and no-choice, but always well cooked.’ ‘Terrific breakfast buffet.’ ‘Our children played pool enthusiastically every evening. Excellent value. We were impressed.’
