Good Hotel Guide Review
‘One of our favourites’: on their third visit in ten years, regular Guide correspondents again loved this double-gabled chalet hotel with rustic decor. The owners, Anneliese and Otto Hauser, ‘are always around’, they say, and ‘their high standards ensure a most comfortable stay’. The building is central, but it stands back from the road in a ‘pretty, but noisy’ garden, and consists of three properties – the main building, another with suites, and a third containing chalets. They are all connected by underground corridors. The attractive lounge and restaurant (with zither player) have spectacular Alpine views. ‘Breakfast and dinner are eagerly anticipated.’ Meals are thought ‘good, though not haute cuisine’; vegetarians are catered for. Summer meals are served alfresco. The bedrooms, with much panelling, are good-sized and immaculate. ‘Our junior suite faced the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger.’ In summer, Grindelwald is full of tourists, ‘but by taking a ski lift you can quickly be in the mountains, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, wild flowers, peace and quiet’. There are many interesting walks, well signposted, and cogwheel trains from the village go to the Jungfraujoch (at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe). Excellent rail and postbus services make many other attractive villages easily accessible.
