Good Hotel Guide Review
At the foot of the Chiemgau Alps, in a ‘charming, unspoilt’ little town, this is ‘a place to feel self-indulgent’, says an enthusiastic visitor. A 14th-century building has been turned into this large and imposing hotel/restaurant (Relais & Châteaux), famed for owner/chef Heinz Winkler’s cuisine (Michelin two stars). The decor is ‘1980s luxury-style’; murals decorate the public rooms. No lounge, but a ‘big, rather ostentatious lobby’. Some detractors feel that the hotel is looking old-fashioned and tired, although ‘the food did not disappoint. Herr Winkler came to say hello, reinforcing the impression that this is very much his personal creation.’ Some guests find the ‘army of staff’ a bit ‘over-attentive’, but others wrote: ‘Service is fantastic. We were greeted by name, though we had not visited before. A superb weekend treat.’ The wine list ‘contains some true greats at great prices’. ‘Large, stylish’ bedrooms face the mountains, or the attractive gardens (with loungers and pond). There’s a patio for drinks in summer, a winter garden, and a spa with a Roman-style bathing area. Peaceful, apart from early church bells.
