Good Hotel Guide Review
On a hill within the ramparts of this interesting old Basque fishing port/seaside resort (also known by its Castilian name, Fuenterrabía), this small B&B hotel is a converted 14th-century palace (‘stone and wood predominate’). The owner, Victor Lekuona, is said to be ‘very helpful’; his staff are ‘very friendly’; there is ‘an excellent receptionist with fluent English’. ‘Our good-sized top-floor room had a triangular shape, arched doors and windows, and triangular bathroom,’ say visitors this year. ‘Its ceiling was low, but it was well thought out and neat. It looked out to France and over San Sebastián’s little airport; we saw only one small plane all weekend.’ Another visitor ‘loved her room with its curvy bath’. Earlier comments: ‘Our delicious room, shocking pink, had fine old beams, beautiful wooden doors, view of garden and neighbouring pear orchard (lots of sparrows).’ ‘Delicious orange juice, squeezed to order, came with my tea tray.’ The ‘excellent’ breakfast, in the cafeteria or outdoors, can include bacon and eggs. Plenty of restaurants nearby: the one next door was liked this year, or you could try Alameda (Michelin star). ‘Difficult to find by car: get them to send a map.’ The town is ‘quiet and tidy; definitely not the Costa del Sol’.
