Good Hotel Guide Review
There are log fires, bucolic views and a warm welcome at this Grade II* listed country house, in a spread of gardens surrounded by acres of farmland and forest. Engineer William Hedley, who built the steam engine Puffing Billy, once lived here. Today, Christine Hewitt, an attentive hostess, offers good-value B&B accommodation in quiet and comfortable, traditionally decorated bedrooms (with super-king beds) in the main house, adjoining farmhouse and cottage. Home-made, home-reared and home-grown fare feature at breakfast. The grounds provide generous scope for gentle strolls or for exercising dogs and exuberant children; trails lead to the river and the Lanchester Valley Railway Path. The B&B is well placed for Durham.
