Jutting out over a private marina, this ocean liner-like hotel is ship-shape inside, with porthole-shaped mirrors, vintage glass fish floats and nautical bits and pieces. Bedrooms and suites, several with a Juliet balcony, are cheerily decorated with some retro touches, and supplied with decanters of gin and sherry. The buzzy sixth-floor bar has harbour views. Jetty restaurant pairs locally caught seafood with seasonal produce, eaten on the terrace in welcoming weather.

In a converted warehouse facing the old waterfront, this Italian restaurant with rooms is just across from Red Funnel Ferries, and convenient for the high street and railway station. Air-conditioned bedrooms are plushly furnished and have a safe, bathrobes and slippers. A Continental breakfast is served in the morning. In Ennio’s Restaurant, there is a welcoming bar, and piattis of typical Italian cuisine and regional specials. A flower-decked pavement terrace is ideal for al fresco dining. Limited (paid) parking can be reserved.

More than a century old, this former seafarers’ hotel is in a quaint street in the city’s historic maritime district. It takes its name from the famous shipping line. A Fuller’s pub, the bar stocks draught ales and a large selection of gins and wines. In the panelled dining room, menus of classic fare are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cosy, contemporary bedrooms are located on ‘decks’. Upper Deck rooms are the most spacious; bathrooms have a roll-top bath.
