Salzburg

Run by its friendly new owner, Christine Gmachl, this B&B hotel is a converted 14th-century Burgerhaus in an ‘outstanding’ location, in the middle of the old town and near the Mozartplatz.

Altstadthotel Wolf-Dietrich

Altstadthotel Wolf-Dietrich

Salzburg

On the edge of the Altstadt, the Schmelzle family’s ‘pleasant hotel’ is near Schloss Mirabell and the Kapuzinerberg. Some bedrooms (several have a balcony) look over the adjacent St Sebastian’s church and Italianate cloister (where Mozart’s father and widow lie buried).

Music, palaces, museums, parks and cafes

Salzburg is probably most famous for being both Mozart’s birthplace and the setting for The Sound of Music, and the city still offers a year-round programme of world-class music performances – from operas and choral music to classical music festivals – often set in beautiful Baroque churches or grand concert halls.

There is a wealth of history to explore here, too: wander around the pedestrianised old town of Altstadt, revel in the city views from the fortress Hohensalzburg, or spend the day relaxing in the pleasure palace of Schloss Hellbrunn.

Palaces, museums, parks and cafes: you’ll be more likely to run out of time than things to do.
