Good Hotel Guide Review
A large and opulent hotel in a pink 19th-century stately home with a modern wing. It stands above terraces with orange trees on a hilltop with glorious views over the Tagus. ‘Grande luxe, wonderfully done.’ ‘One of the best hotels I know,’ say readers. There is an impressive marble lobby, a ‘large and attractive’ bar/lounge. A wide waterfall spills over azulejo tiles, down to the gardens and large swimming pool. The pricier bedrooms, in the original wing, are decorated in individual style (18th century to Art Deco); all the rooms in the modern extension have a spacious balcony. Portuguese food, with subtly cooked fish dishes, is served in the elegant Lapa restaurant, which has a ‘soothing air, delightful waiters’. Between May and September Le Pavillon poolside restaurant is the idyllic setting for outdoor light meals and cocktails. Breakfast is a ‘magnificent spread’.
