Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Unpretentious, spotless, good value’, Nathalie Standaert’s B&B hotel consists of four gabled houses on a corner by a canal bridge. They have been updated in a style ‘perfectly suited’ to their age; a lift has been ‘craftily fitted’ into a medieval space. Within walking distance are all the main sights, but one visitor preferred using one of the bicycles which the hotel provides free of charge: ‘We found the streets less crowded than the pavements.’ An earlier comment: ‘Our spacious, quiet room faced the inner courtyard and had everything we could want. Reception staff were young, courteous and knowledgeable.’ The best bedrooms are oak-beamed. ‘Our third-floor double was airy, very comfortable.’ Some rooms are ‘small and functional’; some hear comings and goings at a nearby school. The good breakfast, in a room with a high ceiling, candles, flowers, open fire, includes ‘cereals, six types of home-made bread, yogurt, fruit purées’. In the 17th-century cellar is a bar and a lounge with magazines and children’s games. ‘Good-mannered’ dogs are accepted (not in the breakfast room). The hotel provides guests with a city map and a list of recommended restaurants nearby.
